چکیده

The photonic band gap of a two-dimensional photonic crystal is continuously tuned using the temperature dependent refractive index of a liquid crystal. Liquid crystal E7 was infiltrated into the air pores of a macroporous silicon photonic crystal with a triangular lattice pitch of 1.58 mm and a band gap wavelength range of 3.3–5.7 mm. After infiltration, the band gap for the H polarized field shifted dramatically to 4.4–6.0 mm while that of the E-polarized field collapsed. As the sample was heated to the nematic-isotropic phase transition temperature of the liquid crystal (59 °C), the short-wavelength band edge of the H gap shifted by as much as 70 nm while the long-wavelength edge was constant within experimental error. Band structure calculations incorporating the temperature dependence of the liquid crystal birefringence can account for our results and also point to an escaped-radial alignment of the liquid crystal in the nematic phase.

Temperature Tunability of Dielectric/ Liquid Crystal / Dielectric Photonic Crystal Structures

Recently, photonic crystals doped with liquid crystal (LC) material havegained much research interest. In this article new ternary one-dimensional photoniccrystal introduced and studied. The liquid crystal layer of 5CB and 5PCH is sandwichedby two dielectric layers. For the first time, we use four structures SiO2/UCF35/CaF2,SiO2/5CB/CaF2, NFK51/UCF35/NPSK53 and NFK51/5CB/NPSK53. The effect ofte...

Tunable Defect Mode in One-Dimensional Ternary Nanophotonic Crystal with Mirror Symmetry

In this paper, the properties of the defect mode in the photonic band gap ofone-dimensional ternary photonic crystals containing high temperature superconductorlayer (SPCs) have been theoretically investigated. We considered the quasi-periodiclayered structures by choosing two order of ternary Thue-Morse structures with mirrorsymmetry. We investigated the transmission spectra of these structure...

Designing voltage tunable single and multi-channel optical filter with 1DDPC nano-structure

An electro-optic tunable single and multi-channel optical filter based on one-dimensional defective photonic crystal (1DDPC) structure is proposed. A couple of externally tunable defects in arrangement of (AB)5D1(BA)D2(BA)5, where A and B are dielectric materials, D1 and D2 are the tunable defects are used. The defects are composed of the ferroelectric LiNbO3 crystals and two pairs of thin Ag l...

Attenuation of optical transmission within the band gap of thin two-dimensional macroporous silicon photonic crystals

The transmissivity within the photonic band gap of two-dimensional photonic crystals of macroporous silicon is reported as a function of crystal thickness. Measurements were carried out for crystals of nominally 1, 2, 3, and 4 crystal layers using a commercial parametric source, with a wavelength tunable from 3 to 5 mm. For wavelengths well within the 3–5 mm photonic band gap, attenuation of ap...
